5 pro tips to boost nail strength!

Think of your dream nails. They’re probably strong, smooth, healthy, and don’t chip during every special occasion.

Sounds too good to be true? If your nails are prone to breakage, we know it can be a lofty goal. But the truth is, weak nails don’t have to be forever.

Weak nails can happen for many reasons. According to Marcela Correa, Owner and Medical Nail Technician of Medi Pedi NYC, “Wetting the hands too much or using products with a heavy alcohol content can dry out nails, causing weakening and breakage.” Frequent acrylic or gel application can also cause damage.

Correa shares five helpful tips to improve nail strength now and in the future. Your journey to building strong, beautiful nails starts here:

File & Trim Gently: Avoid trimming your nails dry,” says Correa. “Trimming after the shower is best as your nails will be softer and easier to manage. This prevents unwanted cracks in your nails. And filing? Straight across, with rounded corners is the best shape for any nail condition— especially fragile or prone to breakage.”

But First Wash: Our number one tip for a long-lasting mani? Cleanse your hands before applying your nail polish. Oil, debris and dirt can prevent your nail lacquer from adhering properly to the nail bed, leading to chipping and peeling. Taking the extra moment to make sure your nails are clean prior to nail polish application will not only make you less susceptible to germs but also dramatically enhance the performance of your nail treatment.

Take Breaks: It may be tempting to cover up damaged nails with a fresh set of acrylics or gels, but frequent application can make already-brittle nails thinner, weaker, and more likely to break. Give your natural nails a rest in between appointments, and focus on reparative and restorative products to boost their strength.

Moisturize Nails & Cuticles: Correa says, “Keep them hydrated! Using an oil like Jojoba Oil that’s rich in Vitamin E not only strengthens nails to keep them from breaking, but promotes faster nail growth.

Eat Well: We’ve all heard it before- but you truly are what you eat. Correa suggests, “Have a well-balanced diet that’s rich in Vitamin B. It’s packed with protein and amino acids, which are great for the keratin production in the body and essential for nails.”
