Tired Eyes? Here's How to Get Rid of Dark Circles

If you think that being a grown-up means you no longer get back to school fatigue– think again! At the beginning of the school year, the responsibilities feel like they’re doubled. For example, I need to make sure my kids wake up early (which means even earlier mornings for me!), plus I have to pack their lunches, drive them to and from school, and help with homework. That adds up to a lot of stress and fatigue!

Unfortunately, that sort of fatigue can have negative consequences on your appearance. For me, it shows up as dark circles under my eyes.

Luckily, even if you can’t avoid the stressors of the school year, there’s some easy tricks you can use to wake up tired eyes. Keep reading to learn what causes dark circles under the eyes, and how to get rid of dark circles once and for all!

What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes?

Fatigue is one of the biggest causes of under eye circles. Sleep deprivation makes the skin appear paler, which in turn can make the dark blood vessels beneath the eyes more pronounced. Plus, fatigue can cause fluids to build up under your eyes, making the eyes look puffy and tired.

However, fatigue is not the only cause of dark circles. Dark circles can also show up as a natural part of aging. As we get older, the skin under our eyes thins, which makes dark circles more pronounced. But don’t worry! This can be treated, as you’ll see below.

Dehydration can make eyes appear sunken and sallow, worsening dark circles. Seasonal allergies may also be the cause of dark circles under the eyes. Fall is a big time for outdoor allergies, so the remedy for your dark circles may be as simple as taking an antihistamine!

Finally, some people are just more genetically predisposed to under eye circles. If your parents have dark circles under their eyes, you’re more likely to have them too!

How to Get Rid of Dark Circles

No matter what the cause of your dark circles, follow these tips and tricks to diminish their appearance. Hello, bright eyes!

Get more sleep - Of course the best way to get rid of dark circles from fatigue is just to get more sleep! Easier said than done, right?

I try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. My trick for getting more sleep is simple: I set an alarm that tells me when I need to go to bed! I also utilize the Night Shift feature on my phone, which reduces my blue light exposure in the evening. Studies have shown that blue light from phones can disrupt your sleep patterns, but I can’t give up my nightly Instagram scrolling! So, using this feature is the perfect compromise.

Use a targeted under eye treatment - Unfortunately, getting more sleep isn’t always a viable option. That’s one of the reasons we created Revitalite Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector - Professional Strength.

We formulated this 5-in-1 treatment with four key active ingredients to address all eye concerns including circles, puffiness and even drooping lids. I use it twice daily and the difference is eye-opening! The best part is the micronized light diffusing pigments featured in the cream that instantly conceals any visible damage while treating my issues. Not to mention the cool tip applicator feels amazing as it goes on and helps smooth out the fatigue!

Drink plenty of water - Dehydration makes eyes appear sunken and dull, so drinking more water is key to looking wide awake.

I used to struggle with drinking enough water until I began making my own flavored water at home. I love to add fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs to my water to give it a little extra kick. My favorite combination currently is strawberry and mint! When water tastes this good, it’s easy to drink the recommended 2 liters per day.

Reduce sodium intake - Have you ever gone out to eat at a restaurant for dinner, only to wake up the next morning with tired, puffy eyes? That’s from salt! That unwanted puffiness can create shadows under the eyes, making dark circles even more.

Most restaurants use a lot of salt in the cooking to make their food taste delicious, so try eating at home more often and using salt-free seasonings to keep your eyes looking wide awake.

Place Tea Bags on Your Eyes - Caffeinated tea, which contains natural tannins, can help to stimulate healthy blood circulation, tighten, and soothe skin. This has been a long-used remedy by runway models for reducing eye puffiness.

Soak two tea bags in warm water for 2-3 minutes, and then chill the bags for in the refrigerator until cold. Gently lay one tea bag on each eye for five minutes, and your eyes will feel fresh. For optimal results, use this treatment once a week.
